Ashure Time for Hagia Sophia

We passed ashure around to our visitors today. Ashure (in Turkish Aşure) or Noah’s Pudding is a Turkish dessert congee that is made of a mixture consisting of grains,  fruitsands nuts. In Turkish tradition, this dish is made mostly on 10th of Muharram or after 10th of Muharram in Islamic Lunar Calendar. In Islamic religion, it is claimed that when Noah’s Ark came to rest on Mount Ararat, Noah’s family celebrate with a special dish. Since their supplies were nearly axhausted, what was left was cooked together to from a puding, what is now call “Ashure”. Imam Hussein ibn Ali (son of Islamic caliphet Ali and the grandson Islamic prophet Muahmmad) with a small group of his companions and family members (in total who were around 72 men and few ladies and children) were murdered at the Battle of Karbala on 10th of Muharram by Yezid’s legion. So Ashure cooking and sharing it following the days.. Traditionally, Ashure is made in large quantities to commemorate the ark’s landing and the battle of Karbala and distributed to friends, realitives, neighbors, colleagues,classmate, among others, without regarol to the recipient’s religion or belief system as an offering of peace and love. Ashure is part of the culinary tradition of Turkey as well  as many of the surrounding countries like Greece, Christianty and  Jewish cultures as well as Muslims share similar versions of  this dessert under a varietyof names..
